FAQ

Questions Kiwi mechanics ask

How much do mechanics earn in NZ in 2026?
Apprentices $22–$27/hr, qualified auto mechanics $30–$42/hr, diesel and heavy mechanics $38–$52/hr, and workshop foremen or EV specialists $48–$65/hr. Rural pays slightly less than Auckland and Wellington.
Can I get into mechanics with no experience or qualification?
Yes. You can start with no qualification as a trainee or apprentice mechanic and earn while you train toward the NZ Certificate in Automotive Engineering. Plenty of workshops take on trainees and put you through it — a driver licence and a genuine interest in cars matter most to get started. See our apprentice pathway.
Is diesel or heavy mechanic pay better than auto?
Yes, typically 20–30% more. Heavy diesel, marine, and agricultural mechanics are in shorter supply than auto mechanics. Mining and forestry workshops can pay significantly more, especially with FIFO allowances.
What should be on a mechanic CV in NZ?
One page. Qualification up top (NZ Certificate in Automotive Engineering, level, year), WoF/CoF inspector authority, drivers class, any specialist training (EV, hybrid, diesel). Then recent workshops, vehicle classes and makes you know. Two referees.
Should I move from auto to EV or hybrid?
EV and hybrid specialists are in short supply and pay 10–20% more than standard auto. Courses are short (a few weeks) and paid back within months of taking an EV-specialist role.
