FAQ

Questions Kiwi builders ask

How much do builders earn in NZ?
First-year apprentices $22–$25/hr, qualified builders $32–$45/hr, leading hands $45–$60/hr, and self-employed subbies charge $55–$85/hr (which lands around $40–$55/hr after GST, tools and downtime). Auckland and Wellington sit at the top of each band.
Do I need an LBP to work as a builder in NZ?
You don't need one to be employed, but you need an LBP (Licensed Building Practitioner) to sign off restricted building work. Most qualified builders with 2+ years post-apprenticeship apply for one — it opens up more jobs and higher pay.
What should a builder CV look like?
One page. Lead with your tickets (LBP category, Site Safe, Elevated Work Platform, First Aid, drivers). Then list recent projects with scope (new build, reno, commercial fit-out, square metres, crew size). Finish with two referees who have actually worked with you. Skip the fluffy personal statement.
Can I get into building with no experience?
Yes. Most builders start as a labourer or a first-year apprentice with no experience at all — a driver licence, a willingness to turn up on time and work hard, and genuine interest are what employers look for to start. From there you earn while you train toward your qualification. See our apprentice pathway for the step-by-step.
How do I prepare for a builder job interview?
Interviews are short and practical. Expect: "walk me through a job you ran from start to finish", "tell me about a time something went wrong on site", and "what tickets do you hold?" Have 2–3 real stories ready. Our Interview Simulator will drill you on these and score you out of 100.
